چکیده

Introduction: Mannan is a major component of the Candida albicans cell wall, composing up to 7% of the cell dry weight, and is one of the main Candida antigens that circulate during infection. It is a serum marker for the presence of Invasive Candidiasis is Candida Mannan antibody, which has been included in the relevant European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer/ Mycoses Study Group (EORTC/MSG) diagnostic criteria. Aims of the study were to study the prevalence of invasive candidiasis in patients with malignant conditions and to assess the role of Candida Mannan antibody assay in the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis. Material and method: A total of 88 individuals attending Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) and Dr. B. Barooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) with diagnosed malignancy who are at risk of developing invasive infection with Candidaspp according to Revised EORTC criteria were enrolled for the study Results: Out of the 88 study cases, 38 (43.18%) patients were found to fulfil the criteria necessary for qualifying as cases of invasive candidiasis. Hence, the prevalence rate of invasive candidiasis in the study group was calculated to be 43.18%. The sensitivity, specificity, Positive predictive value (PPV) and Negative predictive value (NPV) of Candida Mannan Antibody assay wascalculated as 60.52%, 92.0%, 85.18% and 75.41% respectively. Conclusions: The high Specificity, PPV and an at-par NPV suggest that the test may be particularly useful in excluding Invasive Candidiasis. It is thus feasible to explore the use of serial measurements of Mannan and Anti-Mannan as part of a broader diagnostic strategy for selecting patients to receive antifungal drug therapy. Contribution of Candida biomarkers and DNA detection for the diagnosis of invasive candidiasis in ICU patients with severe abdominal conditions

BACKGROUND To assess the performance of Candida albicans germ tube antibody (CAGTA), (1 → 3)-ß-D-glucan (BDG), mannan antigen (mannan-Ag), anti-mannan antibodies (mannan-Ab), and Candida DNA for diagnosing invasive candidiasis (IC) in ICU patients with severe abdominal conditions (SAC). METHODS A prospective study of 233 non-neutropenic patients with SAC on ICU admission and expected stay ≥ 7...

A real time PCR assay on blood for diagnosis of invasive candidiasis in immunocompromised patient

Background and Purpose: Invasive candidiasis (IC) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with hematologic disorders and bone marrow transplant recipients. Rapid, specific and sensitive test for the timely accuracy in immunocompromised patients to reduce mortality rates and prevent IC progress is necessary. We established a real-time PCR assay on blood for the diagnosis an...

Mannan antigenemia in the diagnosis of invasive Candida infections.

Because it is often difficult to diagnose invasive Candida infections, a sensitive hemagglutination inhibition assay to detect the surface antigen, mannan, was developed. Mannan antigenemia was detected early in the course of infection in 4 of 14 patients with systemic candidiasis and 2 of 5 patients with invasive gastrointestinal candidiasis. Mannan was not detected in 48 patients with noninva...

Detection of serum Candida antigens by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and a latex agglutination test with anti-Candida albicans and anti-Candida krusei antibodies.

Serum samples from 197 patients with and without candidiasis were assayed for Candida albicans mannan and Candida krusei mannan by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and a latex agglutination test (LA) and for D-arabinitol by the enzymatic fluorometric method. Of the 43 patients positive for C. albicans mannan (> or = 0.2 ng/ml), 34 were infected with C. albicans and 9 were infected w...

Invasive candidiasis serological diagnosis in solid organ transplant recipients

Solid organ transplant recipients are at high risk of fungal infections, because of ongoing immunosuppressive treatment. There are three post organ transplant phases: early, intermediate, and late, all of them at risk of Candida infections. Since conventional tests are insufficient, specific secondary diagnostic tests are still being explored. Serological tests are currently the most common cho...
